A Welcoming Drive To Whitmuir
A Brief History Whitmuir appears in documents from the Middle Ages. The Steading buildings are the oldest on the property, most likely built at the end of the 18th century. They form part of structures adjacent to but separted from the main house. Currently, the Steadings are a part of a 450 acre farm, arable and grazing, fields and woodland. They are also adjacent to gardens which include a woodland garden, rock garden and croquet lawn and pavilion, about five acres in all. Whitmuir Farm is at an elevation of 900 feet with an unobstructed view to the English border, a fifty mile panorama from the Cheviots to Carter Bar and points west. These are the historic Scottish Borders, its history from the Middle Ages is reflected in the ruins of Abbeys, Border Keeps, to Jacobean and Adams mansions. Sir Walter Scott spent his life in the area and his influence is apparent. His estate, Abbotsford, is five miles away. The passion for botanical collecting is reflected in the many 18th and 19th century gardens in the area that are open to the public. For recreation, there are golf courses by every town, fishing on the Tweed and lochs, two riding stables within seven miles and extensive hill walking trails, for example, St. Cuthbert's way. Edinburgh, the Capital of Scotland is 45 miles away, and Glasgow is 70 miles distant. |
